最近、ミャンマー地震のことについてよく聞かれるので、こちらで簡単にご説明したいと思います。
まず、私の知り合いは全て無事です。孤児院も病院も何も被害はありませんので、ご安心ください。
おそらく、皆さんの周囲にミャンマーへ私ほど頻繁に渡航している人間はいない事と思います。そして、ミャンマー地震のニュースを見て、多くの方は私のことを連想したのではないでしょうか？
ミャンマー地震の震源地はマンダレーです。私が訪問しているヤンゴンからマンダレーまで行くには飛行機で1時間半かかります。ちなみに、バスだと10時間くらい、列車だと15時間かかる距離です。
日本に例えれば、名古屋と仙台くらいの感じになるでしょうか。従って、ヤンゴンでの被害は皆無です（私が知る限り）。
来月（5月）にミャンマーへ渡航する予定です。今年の2月くらいに既に飛行機の往路のチケットは購入し、さらにホテルも予約済みでした。
ミャンマーへ入国するには観光ビザが必要なのですが、先週少し早めに取っておこうと思い立ち、申請サイトにアクセスしてみました（ミャンマーの観光ビザはウエッブサイトで申請可能です）。
すると、「ミャンマー地震の影響で観光ビザの発給を停止中」となっていました。先述したように飛行機チケット（往路）は購入済み、さらに現地のホテルも予約済みでした。両方ともキャンセル不可です。
観光ビザの発給開始は未定となっており、渡緬までまだ1ヵ月はあるものの、この事態を何とか打開すべくすぐに行動に移しました。最初に旅行会社へのビザ取得代行の問い合わせです。
10社くらいに問い合わせをして返信を待っていました。するとすぐに何社からか返信がありましたが、「弊社ではE-visaでの申請代行になります」とのこと。
「おそらく、この人たちはE-visa申請ができないことを知らないのだろう」と思いつつ、数日後に再度ミャンマーのビザ申請サイトにアクセスしてみると、観光ビザの申請が再開されていました。もちろん、その場ですぐに申請。そして、無事取得が完了しました。
今回ミャンマーへ行けなかったら、縁がなかったということと開き直っていましたが、観光ビザがとれたということは、まだまだ縁があるようです。
ミャンマーへ通い始めて10年になりますので、最近はそれほどワクワク感はないのですが、今回はどういうわけか楽しみです。自分でもこのワクワク感の正体は不明です。ミャンマーへ行けばわかるのかもしれないです。
ミャンマーからの帰路はバンコクへ立ち寄ります。そして、バンコクの北東にある小さな街へ行ってきます。ある重要なミッションがあり、そこへ行くことになりました。この日のためにネクタイとセミフォーマルの服も用意しました。
ネクタイをするのは、大学時代の友人の結婚式以来なので30年ぶりくらいか（笑）。それくらい、自分にとっては重要なミッションなのです。
来月が待ち遠しい！

Recently, I’ve been frequently asked about the earthquake in Myanmar, so I’d like to provide a brief explanation here.
First of all, all my acquaintances are safe. There is no damage to the orphanage or hospital, so please rest assured.
I believe there might not be many around you who travel to Myanmar as frequently as I do. When you hear news about the earthquake in Myanmar, many of you might have thought of me.
The epicenter of the earthquake was in Mandalay. To get from Yangon, which I visit, to Mandalay takes about an hour and a half by plane. By bus, it would take around 10 hours, and by train, about 15 hours.
In terms of distance, it’s similar to traveling between Nagoya and Sendai in Japan. Therefore, as far as I know, there is no damage in Yangon.
I plan to travel to Myanmar next month (May). I had already purchased a one-way plane ticket around February this year, and I also had the hotel booked.
To enter Myanmar, a tourist visa is required. Last week, I thought I’d apply for it a bit early, so I accessed the application website (you can apply for a Myanmar tourist visa online).
However, I found the message “Tourist visa issuance is suspended due to the Myanmar earthquake.” As mentioned, I have already bought my flight ticket (one-way) and booked a hotel there. Both are non-refundable.
The restart date for visa issuance is undecided, but with a month left before my trip, I immediately took action to resolve this situation. My first step was to inquire about visa acquisition through travel agencies.
I contacted about ten companies and awaited their replies. Soon, a few companies responded, stating, “We handle applications for e-visas.”
I thought, “These people probably don’t know that e-visa applications are currently impossible.” However, a few days later, I checked the Myanmar visa application site again, and tourist visa applications had resumed. Of course, I applied immediately. I successfully obtained the tourist visa.
I had resigned myself to thinking that if I couldn’t go to Myanmar this time, then it wasn’t meant to be. But with the visa secured, it seems that the connection remains strong.
Having traveled to Myanmar for ten years, I don’t feel as excited as I once did, but for some reason, this time I am looking forward to it. Even I am unclear about the nature of this excitement. Perhaps I’ll understand once I get to Myanmar.
On my way back from Myanmar, I will stop by Bangkok. I’ll be traveling to a small town in the northeast of Bangkok for an important mission. I have prepared a tie and semi-formal attire for this occasion.
Wearing a tie is something I haven’t done in about 30 years since a college friend’s wedding (laugh). That’s how significant this mission is to me.
